STATEMENT OF THE WORKERS AND YOUTH SOLIDARITY NETWORK (WYSN) ON THE ONGOING FCTA/FCDA WORKERS STRIKE

The Workers and Youth Solidarity Network (WYSN) stands firmly with the brave and resilient workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) and the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) under the leadership of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Mr. Nyesom Wike, who have been compelled to embark on strike action due to the continued neglect of their welfare and the government’s refusal to resolve long-standing promotion and career-progression matters.

For years, FCTA and FCDA workers have been grappling with unresolved promotion issues, salary stagnation, lack of transparency in deployment, and a hostile administrative environment that undermines motivation and productivity. Instead of addressing these legitimate grievances, successive authorities have chosen to delay, deny, or dismiss workers’ demands pushing them into a corner where peaceful protest and strike action become unavoidable.

WYSN condemns, in the strongest terms, the persistent disregard for workers’ rights and the culture of impunity that allows government agencies to ignore due process in matters of promotion, upgrading, arrears, and general welfare. Workers are the backbone of public service delivery in Abuja; without them, essential governance structures collapse. It is therefore shameful that those entrusted with public administration have failed to treat their own employees with fairness, dignity, and respect.

We call on the FCT Minister, the FCDA leadership, and relevant federal authorities to immediately:

1. Conclude all outstanding promotion processes without manipulation, bias, or delay.
2. Implement all previously approved promotions and financial benefits.
3. Ensure a transparent framework for future career progression.
4. Resolve all welfare-related grievances through genuine dialogue—not intimidation.
5. Guarantee that no worker will be victimized for participating in the strike.

The strike by FCTA/FCDA workers is not only justified it is a necessary response to prolonged injustice. Workers have shown patience, professionalism, and commitment to public service. It is now the government’s turn to demonstrate responsibility by addressing the issues instead of allowing the crisis to escalate.

WYSN urges all civil society organisations, trade unions, student groups, and grassroots movements to stand in solidarity with the striking workers. An injury to one group of workers is an injury to all. When the rights of workers are ignored, the rights of all citizens are endangered.

The industrial action by workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) continued on Tuesday, as the Joint Union Action Congress (JUAC) has been largely successful and needs solidarity from all people of the Federal Capital Territory to force the authority to meet the demands of the striking workers.

We reaffirm our unwavering support for the FCTA/FCDA workforce and call for immediate negotiations that are transparent, time-bound, and result-oriented. The struggle continues until justice, fairness, and dignity prevail.

Solidarity forever.
Iortyom Ushahemba Moses
Northern Coordinator
